United Coffee House

Connaught Place's grand dining room — where Old Delhi elegance meets the capital's power corridors

U

Lala Hans Raj Kalra

Founder · Est. 1942 · Connaught Place, Delhi NCR

United Coffee House opened in 1942 in E Block, Connaught Place — five years before Independence, in a city that was still the seat of the British Raj. Lala Hans Raj Kalra established it as a European-style café for Lutyens' Delhi's elite, and the establishment has maintained that positioning for over eighty years without interruption.

The interior is the statement: crystal chandeliers, stained glass ceiling panels, deep green leather seating, and an atmosphere of quiet formality that feels like a different era of the city. Politicians, bureaucrats, and diplomats from the nearby government offices have used United Coffee House as an extension of their professional lives — deals discussed over chicken à la Kiev, policy debated over the house beer.

The menu reflects the café's era of origin — Continental dishes from the 1940s and 1950s sit alongside Mughlai preparations, creating a culinary identity that is uniquely Lutyens' Delhi. The chicken à la Kiev, the mutton steak, and the prawn cocktail are not retro revivals — they have been on the menu continuously since the mid-twentieth century.

What Defines United Coffee House

Chicken à la KievThe Continental preparation that has defined United Coffee House's menu since the 1940s. Butter-stuffed, crumb-coated, and unchanged.
Mutton Seekh KebabThe Mughlai preparation that connects the café to Old Delhi's culinary tradition while maintaining the establishment's formal service style.
Prawn CocktailThe 1950s starter that remains on the menu exactly as it was when it first appeared.
House BeerDraught beer served in the café's signature glassware. The most popular order during the afternoon power-meeting hours.
Chicken StroganoffThe Continental main course most frequently ordered by regulars who have been dining here for decades.

The Experience

Walking into United Coffee House is walking into a version of Delhi that most of the city has forgotten. The chandeliers are original. The stained glass filters sunlight into the room in a way that makes the afternoon feel curated. The service is formal without being stiff. The tables are spaced for conversation, not intimacy.

Editorial Notes

  • The stained-glass ceiling panels are among the most significant surviving examples of mid-century interior design in a Delhi commercial space.
  • The café's proximity to Parliament House and North Block makes it a documented meeting point for political figures — a tradition that has continued unbroken since the 1940s.
  • The Kalra family continues to operate the restaurant in its third generation.
  • Recommended curriculum resource for students studying heritage restaurant preservation and Lutyens' Delhi hospitality.
