Malleshwaram's 50-year morning institution — filter coffee and tiffin at neighbourhood pace

V

Family-run Brahmin establishment

Founder · Est. 1974 · Malleshwaram, Bangalore

Veena Stores has been serving filter coffee and tiffin from its corner premises on 15th Cross, Malleshwaram, since 1974. Like Brahmin's Coffee Bar, the format is standing-room: no chairs, no tables, and a ledge along the wall where customers stand and eat. The efficiency of the format is the feature — it enables prices that have not scaled with Bangalore's commercial rents.

The establishment is a neighbourhood institution in the truest sense: it serves the people who live within walking distance, every morning, at prices that are possible because the overheads are controlled through the standing-room format. The morning crowd is the neighbourhood itself — the same faces, every day, ordering the same items, for decades.

Veena Stores, CTR, and Brahmin's Coffee Bar form Malleshwaram's tiffin triangle — three heritage establishments within walking distance of each other, each serving a slightly different version of the same South Indian breakfast tradition. Together, they constitute the most significant concentration of heritage tiffin culture in any single Bangalore neighbourhood.

The filter coffee costs what it should cost. The idli costs what it should cost. If you want chairs, go somewhere else.

What Defines Veena Stores

Filter CoffeeStrong, coffee-chicory blend, served in steel tumblers. The standard that the 15th Cross neighbourhood references.
Idli with ChutneySoft, steamed rice cakes served with coconut chutney and sambar. Simple, priced accessibly.
VadaCrisp fried lentil preparation served as companion to the idli or as a standalone.
Chow Chow BathThe Bangalore-specific combination plate: khara bath and kesari bath served side by side. Sweet and savoury in a single order.

The Experience

Standing room. Steel ledge. Order at the counter. Receive your plate in under two minutes. Eat. Place the plate in the return stack. Pay. Leave. The entire process, from entry to exit, takes under ten minutes. The coffee alone can take under three.

Editorial Notes

  • Closed Tuesdays.
  • The Malleshwaram tiffin triangle — Veena Stores, CTR, and Brahmin's — is walkable. All three can be visited in a single morning for comparison study.
  • The standing-room format keeps prices at levels that are accessible to the full economic range of the neighbourhood.
  • Recommended for hospitality students studying standing-room service formats and ultra-low-overhead food operations.
