The LaLiT Great Eastern

Dalhousie Square's 183-year colonial masterpiece — Asia's oldest luxury hotel

Founder · Est. 1841 · Dalhousie Square (BBD Bagh), Kolkata

The Great Eastern Hotel opened in 1841 in Dalhousie Square — making it the oldest luxury hotel in Asia. The hotel has operated under various names and management through 183 years of Calcutta/Kolkata's history: the British colonial period, Independence, Kolkata's economic challenges, and the present day. The LaLiT Group acquired the property and undertook a significant restoration, reopening it with the heritage fabric preserved.

The hotel's position on Dalhousie Square (now BBD Bagh) places it in the centre of colonial Calcutta's administrative district — the Writers' Building, the General Post Office, and the landmarks of the East India Company period are all within walking distance. The building itself is a heritage structure with period architecture that has been restored rather than replaced.

The Great Eastern's claim as Asia's oldest luxury hotel is supported by documented records. The restaurant and bar programme — including Ekdalia (Bengali), Lava (multi-cuisine), and Wall Street Bar — operates within period interiors that add architectural value to every meal.

We opened in 1841. Calcutta has changed name, governance, and fortune since then. We have endured because the building demands it and the city deserves it.

The Experience

The building is the experience: 1841 architecture, period stairways, colonial-era public spaces, and the knowledge that you are in Asia's oldest luxury hotel. The restoration is sympathetic — it honours the original rather than overwriting it. Dalhousie Square outside is colonial Calcutta in situ.
