The Oberoi Grand
Chowringhee's 85-year grande dame — Kolkata's most significant luxury hotel
The Oberoi Group (acquired from original colonial ownership)
Founder · Est. 1939 · Chowringhee, Jawaharlal Nehru Road, Kolkata
The Oberoi Grand opened in 1939 on Chowringhee — now Jawaharlal Nehru Road — as the Grand Hotel, one of colonial Calcutta's premier luxury establishments. The Oberoi Group acquired the property and transformed it into the brand's showcase in eastern India. The white-columned Victorian-Palladian façade, the interior courtyard with its pool, and the columned public spaces make it one of the most architecturally significant hotel buildings in India.
The hotel's position on Chowringhee places it on Kolkata's most important boulevard — the Maidan (the city's central green space), the Victoria Memorial, St. Paul's Cathedral, and the Indian Museum are all within walking distance. The Oberoi Grand is not adjacent to Kolkata's landmarks; it is among them.
The dining programme — Baan Thai (Thai), Threesixty° (all-day), and the Oberoi Patisserie — operates at the standard that the Oberoi brand maintains. The hotel's courtyard garden and pool — a green oasis within the Chowringhee urban context — provide a retreat that most city-centre hotels cannot offer.

“This hotel has been on Chowringhee since 1939. The Maidan is in front of us. The Victoria Memorial is beside us. We maintain these standards because the neighbourhood demands it.”
What Defines The Oberoi Grand
The Experience
The white columns of the façade announce the hotel from Chowringhee. The lobby is large, high-ceilinged, and furnished with the period character that the building's 1939 origins provide. The courtyard garden, visible from the lobby, provides the visual breathing space. The Maidan — Kolkata's vast green heart — is across the road.
